Macedonian President Stevo
Pendarovski has appointed Talat Dzaferi to form the new
technical government leading North Macedonia to parliamentary
elections on May 8.
However, Dzaferi resigned as parliament speaker yesterday and
is the first ethnic Albanian politician to lead a government in
North Macedonia.
He is, in fact, a member of the Democratic Union for Integration
(DUI), the largest party of the Albanian minority, which makes
up about 25 percent of the population in the former Yugoslav
country (nearly 2 million).
Social Democrat Jovan Mitreski replaced Dzaferi as head of
parliament. Premier Dimitar Kovacevski resigned yesterday, along
with the whole government—a handover agreed upon in recent
months by political forces, the majority, and the opposition.
The new interim government will take office on January 28,
100 days before the May 8 elections, when the possible
presidential runoff will also be held. The first round of the
presidential election has been set for April 24.
