The EU has called on tech giants like
Facebook, X and TikTok to mitigate the specific risks linked to
artificial intelligence in view of June's European election by,
for example, using labels that clearly indicate content created
by the new technology, such as deepfakes.
The recommendations are part of a series of guidelines produced
by the European Commission within the framework of the Digital
Services Act (DSA) aiming to preserve the integrity of election
processes and combat disinformation, the scale of which risks
being amplified with the spread of AI.
The platforms have also been asked to take other measures,
including the introduction of a response mechanism to incidents
in order to reduce their effect on election results and
turnouts.
The EU also suggested they equip themselves with teams with
adequate resources and use the analysis and information
available on local risks and the use of their services by users
to search for information before, during and after elections,
thus improving the mitigation measures.
"2024 is a significant year for elections," said European
Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton.
"That is why with today's guidelines we are making full use of
all the tools offered by the DSA to ensure platforms comply with
their obligations and are not misused to manipulate our
elections, while safeguarding freedom of expression".
The guidelines are for very big search engines and digital
platforms, under the DSA, the EU's main instrument to impose
restrictions on Big Tech, above all when it comes to content
moderation.
