Pope Francis on Wednesday called for
"every effort" to be made to negotiate an end to the world's
conflicts, specifically mentioning the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
"We commend to Saint Joseph the peoples of the tormented Ukraine
and the Holy Land, Palestine, Israel, who suffer so much the
horror of war," the pope said at his weekly general audience, a
day after St Joseph's Day, which is also Fathers' Day in Italy.
"And let us never forget: war is always a defeat, we cannot go
on in war, we must make every effort to negotiate, to negotiate
to end the war. Let us pray for this".
The Argentine pontiff, who has been suffering flu-like symptoms
for weeks, again had an aide read out his lesson during the
audience.
