Israel's Embassy to the Holy See on
Thursday sought to defuse diplomatic tension sparking from a
statement in which it described as as "deplorable" Vatican
Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin's comment that the
reaction to the October 7 attack was disproportionate.
The embassy said that the language was stronger than intended
because of the way the original statement had been translated
from English into Italian.
"In English, the statement referring to His Eminence Cardinal
Parolin's words said ''it is a regrettable declaration',"
explained the embassy.
"The word 'deplorevole' (deplorable) was chosen in the Italian
translation, which could have been translated more precisely as
'sfortunata' (unfortunate)".
