Three businessmen convicted of
felonies regarding waste management, brothers Giovanni, Cuono
and Salvatore Pellini, have successfully appealed to the supreme
Court of Cassation to have an order confiscating over 200
million euros worth of assets from them overturned.
The siblings have been definitively convicted for illegal waste
trafficking and they are blamed for pollution in the area of
Acerra, a town close to Naples in Campania's so-called 'Land of
Fires', where criminal organisations have dumped and burned
trash and toxic waste for decades.
Despite this, the supreme court upheld their challenge against a
Naples court's confiscation order on the grounds that it was
filed too late.
