Centre-left Democratic Party (PD)
leader and ex-premier Enrico Letta on Friday ruled out a deal
for the September 25 general election with populist 5-Star
Movement (M5S) leader and former premier Giuseppe Conte, with
whom the PD broke off an alliance after the M5S helped force
outgoing premier Mario Draghi to quit.
Letta said there was "no chance" of a deal with Conte for the
elections.
He said he was happy with the alliance PD has forged with the
leftwing Italian Left (SI) and the liberal More Europe (+E)
parties, as well as with former M5S leader and Foreign Minister
Luigi Di Maio's Civic Commitment (IC) splinter group.
"For this election campaign I think we're OK now," said Letta,
whose coaolition is trailing far behind the hot favourites in
the centre right led by hard-right Brothers of Italy (FdI)
leader Giorgia Meloni, who looks set to become Italy's first
post-Fascist and first woman prime minister.
Letta added: "there will be surprises, but not in this field,
they will be on the centre right which will have points of
giving way day after day".
