The judge who denied Ilaria Salis
house arrest was wrong but Italy should avoid clashing with
Hungary over the issue of the anti-fascist on trial in Budapest
on charges of attacking two neoNazis with a German 'hammer gang'
in February last year, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said
Thursday.
Monza elementary school teacher Salis, 39, was again led into
court in shackles for Thursday's hearing, sparking a fresh
outcry in Italy.
"I do not agree with the decision to lead a prisoner in chains:
we will continue to protest so that it does not happen again,"
said Tajani, who is also deputy premier.
"The judge did not want to grant the house arrest, in my opinion
wrongly, but politicising (the case) is not useful.
"If we want (transfer) to Italy we must act with diplomacy,
seriousness and prudence.
"Politicising will lead to a clash with Hungarian justice, which
is free to decide as it sees fit".
