President Sergio Mattarella and
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Wednesday they had had
"excellent" talks in Milan with European Commission President
Ursula von der Leyen on the National Recovery and Resilience
Plan (NRRP).
Mattarella called for a realistic and effective reset of the gas
price cap, while assuring von der Leyen of Italy's support for
Ukraine at all levels.
During their lunch, sources said, there was "excellent dialogue"
between the European Commission and the Italian government for
the implementation of the 200-billion-euro EU-funded post-COVID
recovery plan.
On the Italian side, they stressed the need to make the
necessary adjustments to the NRRP taking into account new
factors (inflation, rising costs of energy and raw materials)
caused as a consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Mattarella reportedly said he hoped, after taking note of price
cap on Russian oil, established by the EU in recent days, for a
redefinition of the cap that is "realistic and effective",
presidential Quirinale sources said.
Mattarella said he was concerned about the negative effects for
households and businesses in Italy due to of the high price of
gas.
Support was reaffirmed to Ukraine at all levels, economic,
financial, military humanitarian and on the Italian side also
civil protection.
